Sunday Club
A Message about Sunday
Club from
Christy Qualin, Youth Coordinator
As the school year begins, we
often find ourselves facing new adventures and challenges. There
may be a new class at school, new volunteer work in the
community and at church, or a new class at the neighborhood
community center. We are people on the move, incorporating new
commitments and responsibilities into the fabric of our lives.
In the church year we are midway
through the Season of Pentecost. This season, usually called
ordinary time, reminds us that we live our Christian faith in
the midst of the demands of our daily work and play. The color
of this season, green, symbolizes the growth that comes from our
daily life experiences.
Children from the ages of
pre-school through grade three will participate in a Sunday Club
activity and lesson following the time with children during
worship. Children older than grade three, up through early
middle school will participate in a lesson and activity as well.
We ask that your children, whatever their age, sit with their
family members or other suitable adults during worship to
encourage our intergenerational worship.
Each week we will have at-home
leaflets to accompany our Sunday curriculum. These will be
designed to weave worship, church education experiences, and
family faith explorations together. They will provide background
to the weekly Bible readings and themes of the children's
lessons. Faith sharing ideas will be suggested to help reinforce
and develop the learning that takes place on Sunday mornings.
We want children to feel warmly
welcomed to Broadview Community United Church of Christ,
wherever they are on their faith journeys. If you have any
questions, suggestions or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact Pastor Dan Stern in the church office, at 206-363-8060,
or Christy Qualin, Youth Coordinator. For Christy's number
contact the office. If you would like to become more involved
with Children's Education, we would love to have you on our
team! Thanks!

Meet Our Children and Youth Coordinator:
Christy Qualin
I am so
excited to begin working with the families and children at
Broadview Community United Church of Christ. We will have many
opportunities to build a mutually rewarding relationship in the
next few months. Since building strong relationships with
families and communicating is very important to me, I would like
to give you a bit of background information to help us to get
better acquainted.
I am
originally from Denver, Colorado, and have lived in New Jersey,
Idaho, Arizona and San Diego, prior to moving to Seattle over 20
years ago. My parents, who are both in their 80’s, moved to
Seattle 12 years ago to be closer to their eldest grandchild—my
only daughter. My younger sister, her husband and son live in
Boise, Idaho. We try to visit one another at least twice a year.
My daughter, Sara, is 23 years old, a recent graduate of Western
Washington University, and living in Bellingham. She works in
the winter as a snowboarding instructor at Mt. Baker and has a
temporary job this autumn at an apple farm. Sara’s dad and
step-mom live in Lubbock, Texas.
I have taken
many college courses over the past 30+ years in a variety of
subjects and always seem to gravitate back to early childhood
education and special education. I completed an AA degree in
early childhood education at Shoreline Community College a few
years ago. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Humanities last year
from Washington State University through the Distance Degree
Program.
I have a
widely varied employment background, in addition to my work with
children. I once worked as the deli manager at one of our local
QFC stores. I was employed in the food service industry for many
years performing nearly every job possible—hostess, waitress,
bartender, cook, manager, even dishwasher! I have also worked as
an office administrator in a variety of settings, including at
Broadview church, in an optometrist’s office, at a candy
factory, and at a restaurant.
But the work
I have always enjoyed the most and find most fulfilling is with
children. I have been employed in a family day care, several
child care facilities, with the public schools as a tutor and
paraeducator, and as a private nanny for several families. I
bring a strong desire to guide children to their fullest
potentials to any program. I am passionate about developing
character, compassion and positive values in our children
through example.
I was raised
in the United Methodist Church. I originally came to Broadview
in 1996 as a part-time employee caring for children in the
nursery on Sunday mornings. My daughter was instrumental in
getting me out of the nursery and into the sanctuary, where I
found my faith re-kindled. I joined BCUCC in the fall of 1997. I
have worked in the past as the office administrator for the
church. I have also served on the church council as moderator,
and on a variety of service committees. Currently I assist with
our congregational care team ministry and the diaconate work of
the church.
